Chapter Fourteen
âGage, this is Lieutenant Dollison. The dispatcher just woke me up. I told her she should have woken you up instead of me.â The lieutenant chuckled sleepily. âYou need to go to Denver. Iâve cleared it with the chief. Fly up there as soon as you can and work with the police there.â
âWhatâs going on up there?â I asked.
âRandall Stegnerâs wrecked truck and a mangled dead body,â he said. That brought me fully awake. âTheyâre removing the body and hope to identify it before you get there. We need every bit of evidence you can find from that truck and, of course, from the driver. It could be Randall Stegner. He might really be dead this time. I called up there already and spoke with the investigating officer. Heâll help you when you get there. His name is Corporal Jason Ott. I want you to call him and arrange for him to meet you at the airport when you get there.â

Corporal Ott, a short stocky guy with dark-brown eyes and a shaved head, met me at the airport at eleven that morning as I had earlier requested. It had taken me that long to get there, but I could tell instantly that Jason Ott was a conscientious officer and would do all he could to help me, even though he had clearly had a long and difficult night.
âIt was a bad wreck,â he said as we headed for the police impound lot where he had stowed the truck. âThe body of a man with no ID on him was removed with the help of the Jaws of Life,â he said. âThe truck hit a large tree. There was so much force on impact that it shoved the motor clear back into the front seat. Youâll need to go to the morgue and take a look at the driver. The body was in pretty bad shape, but maybe youâll recognize him.â
âIâll see what I can learn,â I told Corporal Ott. âMy lieutenant told me you guys would help me process the truck for prints and other evidence.â
âWe were just waiting for you to get here to begin,â Ott said.
âI appreciate it,â I told him.
The truck was as badly damaged as I had been told. âThe truck had to have been really racing when it crashed,â I said as I looked over the mangled wreckage.
âThere were no skid marks at the scene, but there were black marks that showed the driver tried to stay on the road but was going too fast. The truck left the road and hit the tree at full speed. We think it had to have been going well in excess of a hundred miles per hour,â he said.
We were joined by a couple of lab technicians, and then we began the laborious job of checking the truck out. We lifted lots of fingerprints and collected hair, fibers, blood samples, and so on from the back seat as well as the front.
What interested me the most was the diving gear that had been gathered at the scene of the accident.
